About the Author
Nicholas Kontis was born on one of the most breathtaking islands in the world, Santorini, Greece, and brought up in America's culture capital of San Francisco. Nick developed a passion for travel at a very young age, going back and forth between San Francisco and Athens, Greece during summer vacation. At age 12 he learned the meaning of travel immersion by staying in various relatives homes, sleeping on couches, and learn to bake bread. At age 19, Nick did his first Europe stomp, renting a car with two friends in Nice, France and later participating in the annual “Running of the Bulls†in Pamplona, Spain, during the San Fermin Festival, where he came out unscathed. It would be an exploring trip around the world at age 24 that would end up being a life changing experience. Subsequent to traveling by car, train, plane, bike, boat and hitchhiking all through the globe, even saving a baby in Bangladesh. It was this trip of a lifetime that drove Nick to a long-lasting affection for travel as well as to a career in the travel industry. After returning to his native San Francisco with no job in sight, Nick proceeded to start the first successful travel agency in the United States specializing in discount around the world airfares. Nick has been featured as a guest speaker on both radio and television. He has been mentioned by Lonely Planet's Tony Wheeler as an airfare master, and often alluded to as the "father of around the world airfares." Arthur Frommer once said, "If Jules Verne were alive today he would use Ticket Planet, (Nick's travel company at the time) to go around the world in 80 days." He is also a contributing writer for USA Today and the Huffington Post Travel, as well as numerous other travel publications. Maybe the greatest point of distinction for Nick is that numerous fellow travel writers and specialists in the field have referred to him as the inspiration for their decision to embark on careers in the industry. Nick's first book is titled, “Going Local – Experiences and Encounters on the Road.†His website is www.nicholaskontis.com Follow Nick Twitter & Instagram @nicholaskontis Facebook – World Travel List , Nicholas Kontis Linkedin – Nicholas Kontis

I was drawn to this book because I just attended a hoteliers' conference (#CHIEF2016) at which the two primary topics in the presentations were the sharing economy and experiential travel. And these are Kontis' two main topics. (Well, two of three, because he squeezes a lot of descriptions of food as a part of experiential travel, and man, can this guy write about food!)Anyway, what I love about this book is that he connects the dots between the sharing economy and experiential travel, and in doing so he uses wonderful anecdotes, which he does well, because (1) he's a great story teller, and (2) he sure has done a ton of traveling. But there's one other aspect of the book that impresses me, too, so let me explain: The conference I attended was of, by, and for the Caribbean Hotel & Travel Association. Kontis appears to have done much of his traveling in Europe, especially Greece, and in Mexico and other parts of Latin America. He's not an expert on the Caribbean. And yet this spoke to me, because the trends and pleasures he's describing are real and universal, so without even having spent swaths of his life in the Caribbean, as I have, he is absolutely on target. Talk about a timely book!
Going Local is not your everyday travel guide that tells you how to see the sights on your vacation by hiring a local tuk-tuk driver. Rather, this is a book that offers ways to enhance the travel experience and make it more personal. This is a practical book, written for those who would prefer to stay and eat with locals rather than stay at five-star hotels and take group tours. Nicholas Kontis shares an extensive collection of links, apps, websites, ideas and other useful tips that will enable readers to go beyond the usual tourist attractions. Most of them were new to me, even though I’ve been a lifelong traveler. I also appreciated the interviews with well-known travel names like Don George and Rick Steves and anecdotes from other frequent travelers.I highly recommend this book – it will enhance anyone's travel experience.
Eclectic travel book good for giving you a broad range of ideas on "taking the road less traveled, living off the beaten path [and] visiting more than just the typical tourist sites." Contains mention of sources you might already be familiar with such as Airbnb, TripAdvisor, Uber, and Rick Steves as well as many exciting new ideas such as Gogobot (groups organized by tribes), Pubsulike Guide (staying in a British Pub), Culinary Food Tours (always wanted to try one) and working with Archeologists in Romania (can you dig it?) Plenty of great ideas to get you started including photos and an active table of contents for ease of use such that it made for an illuminating read and I did enjoy. Gotta go now as I've trips to plan!
It's freshing to see that the art of human interaction with others and nature when travelling is written of in such an honest way. The book is personal and real, it encompasses the broad spectrum of what global travel entails such as the many organizations that assist locals in improving their lives, the beauty of those locations, connecting with the locals on their level rather than visiting in a 'bubble'. The personal accounts, in the Q&A's sections, of the most avid and well traveled people in the world makes me feel like the whole world is a little closer to me and less scary than I had perceived it to be. In all, the book inspires me to think differently about traveling, to feel that a vacation is not only about taking a break and relaxing but also enriching my life by engaging and participating in the local seen as if it where 'home'.....even if I'm there for just a day.Thank youGeorge
The author fully showcases the true meaning of travel, by immersing with local society. Going makes me want to be a better traveler. The book is jam packed with ideas , apps, web sites into blending in to local society while on travel. I simply love the case studies on food and travel, volenteeing, responsible travel, moving overseas. Travel is about immersion and this author clearly covers what travelers need to focus on, and that is learning from people and protecting precious lands. This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it.
To paraphrase Bob Dylan, how many roads must a man walk down before they can call him a world traveler? The answer is unknown to everyone except Nicholas Kontis, who has figured out them all. I've been to 145 countries, but Nicholas has mentioned more ways to travel in "Going Local" than I ever considered. Meal sharing -- what a concept! Don't leave home without this book.- Steve Bergsman, journalist, travel writer and author the nine books including The Death of Johnny Ace and The Seduction of Mary Wells.
I love the way that this travel book encourages you to get off the couch or off your work rut, to go and travel. It even takes the fear out of traveling as a solo female if you have no partner or friends to travel with, willing ones, or ones that can afford or want to travel. It shows how you can tap into communities so you won't feel alone when your traveling. It also shows an alternative way to travel by contributing and immersing yourself into local society and showcases how you don't need much money to travel all while also encouraging you to recharge your karma. It's a great buy or gift for those in need of a vacation, looking to take a sabbatical, take a trip after graduation, or going into retirement. It doesn't matter what age you are, what level of or lack of experienced traveler you are, this book will guide you and cheer you on to take your next journey. I'M BUYING A FEW MORE BOOKS FOR GRADUATING NIECES AND RETIRING FRIENDS. If this book doesn't not encourage you to go and travel, then I don't know what will. It will literally make you run out of excuses for not going.

Snooze. .....what a bore! Globalization? More like suffocation.....Diversity? Left me thirsty! Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of William Wycoff’s smash hit, Diversity amid Globalization! With an arresting visual layout designed for today’s learners, Diversity Amid Globalization emphasizes the connections and diversity between people and places — challenging you to compare and contrast the regions of the world within thematically organized regional chapters. What a page turner it was. Didn’t sleep for four days or nights, just couldn’t put it down! Heck, thinking of getting the hardback for those “ROUGH DAYS,†HAHAHAHAHAHA, you know what I mean, learners!
I bought the book for my Regional Geography class at City College of San Francisco. It covers all regions of the world, some more extensively than others. It offers great pictures and information. However, the authors need to fix their typos and minor errors, so I take off 1 star. They need more editing, proofreading or to hire someone to do such. After all, it is not the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th edition.
I like it a lot! I heartily recommend this book, and college course, for a serious student of our world. As part of my current education plan of working towards my second bachelor degree, Geography is required, and glad it worked out this way. Although I am an experienced man of the world, I have not had a formal geography class since grade school, indeed, not even when in college the first time. Taking this course not only covers the location and topography of all the continents, oceans, nations, states , cities, but also other frameworks, namely:Environmental geography.Population & settlement, people on the land, population growth & change, demographic transitions, migration patterns.Cultural coherence & diversity: the geography of tradition & change, culture in a globalizing world, when cultures collide.Geopolitical framework: fragmentation, unity, nation states, colonialismEconomic & social development: geography of wealth & poverty, more- and less-developed countries, indicators of economic and social development.
Needed the access code for Mastering Geography that the title said it would come with and it didn't. So guess what I have to do? Ship it back and get a different one somewhere else.
This is a decent geography textbook. It has two chapters that introduce basic geographical tools and concepts. The next 12 chapters give overviews of world regions. The regional overviews cover physical geography, environmental issues, culture, politics, and history, among other things.
As an older woman returning to college, I picked Geography as on of my classes for the semester imagining in my mind specifics about what we were going to learn in class. I was wrong. It was so much more. I am sad that I have to return this book because the class was amazing. The class and this book made me feel as if I visited parts of the world I didn't know existed. It was very in-depth and surprisingly very up to date. This book contains all important historical information that has happened even after and 9-11. For each continent it talked about world globalization, environment, regions, temperatures, climate change, politics, conflicts, farming, trades, money, culture, language, migrations, land area, seas, lakes, mountains, drug trades, "The Red Market", everything! Also, it is very clearly written, very easy to understand with beautiful picture illustrations that include maps and sub heads to describe what is happening in a scene. Tables that show rates of population increase, who's increasing their population and how many cultures are not. GIS maps that give you a true look at what's going on with detailed explanation. This book is very well done.Although I found the chapters were very long and it would take more than a day or evening to get through one, they all had links to videos to watch which I found to be faster and extremely interesting and helpful in learning about certain areas of the world when time wasn't on my side, and those going to college know exactly what I mean.Anyone thinking about taking this class, especially those taking journalism and or photography who may be interested in making documentaries or those who like to travel or those just interested in the world should take this class and have the professor use this book! I am a photography major and love to travel and this class inspired me and fueled my desire even more to get out there and explore the world. I was sad to see the class end last night. This book made me feel as if I took off on a world tour adventure and now its over. Out of all my travels this was the best trip I have ever been on.Thank you for the rental of this book. I hope someone else gets as much out of it as I did.
Loose leaf may seem like a ridiculous textbook option however, this is the only way to go! Instead of having to carry the entire textbook to class, I just take out the chapter we are covering that week and put it in a smaller binder. Then, I leave the rest of the text at home which means a much lighter backpack! This option does come with a valid MasteringGeography access code and arrived to Hawaii when it was expected, without any issues.
