About the Author

Leon R. Kass is the Madden-Jewett Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, and Professor Emeritus in the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. Originally trained in medicine (M.D., Chicago, 1962) and biochemistry (Ph.D., Harvard, 1967), he shifted directions from doing science to thinking about its human meaning, and he has been engaged for almost fifty years with ethical and philosophical issues raised by biomedical advance, and, more recently, with broader moral and cultural issues. He taught at St. John’s College (Annapolis) and Georgetown University before returning in 1976 to the University of Chicago, where he was until 2010 an award-winning teacher deeply involved in undergraduate education and committed to the study of classic texts. His books include: The Hungry Soul: Eating and the Perfecting of Our Nature; Wing to Wing, Oar to Oar: Readings on Courting and Marrying (with Amy A. Kass); Life, Liberty, and the Defense of Dignity: The Challenge for Bioethics; The Beginning of Wisdom: Reading Genesis; and What So Proudly We Hail: The American Soul in Story, Speech, and Song (with Amy A. Kass and Diana Schaub). Dr. Kass served on the National Council on the Humanities of the National Endowment for the Humanities; in 2009 he delivered the Jefferson Lecture for the NEH. I am a fan of Leon Kass. His "Beginning of Wisdom" book on Genesis was life changing for me. This book too is very thoughtfully written. It is helpful to have a non-religious or a non-simplistic-platitudinal voice setting forth certain parameters on a meaningful life. As shocking as it is - this book would now be conserved counter cultural.

This is a fantastic book; one of the best books on being human (broadly conceived) and the ethical life that I have read in twenty year or more. I plan on re-reading this many times. Thank you, Dr. Kass.

Leon Kass is truly a gifted writer. His ability to engage your thought is profound. While he does not require your approval, he leads you to understanding. He must have been a remarkable teacher. I am a better person for being exposed to a good man.

Terrific book. Everyone should read it.

I truly enjoyed the author's ability to dissect and interpret meanings and texts. Chapter 15 really "rang the bell" for me!He made clear many aspects of the Bible and the aftermath of ancient family members and their actions and attitudes in generations following.

Sherwood was a unique retelling with a far-reaching, character-driven tale at its heart. Spooner’s version of the Robin Hood origin story held real soul and conflict as it centered around a young woman grappling with grief and fighting the class of gender in a world that was inept at seeing their worth. And as the pages unfolded, more and more I admired Marian’s pure ambition to take hold of a hierarchy that no longer suited its people and to rise against it in the only way she knew how.Even with the story at times being densely packed and slow, I understood why it was needed and kept coming back for Marian. Her incapability to see beyond a few paces ahead of her good intentions was instantly relatable and true to her journey and bleeding heart. And due to that strong conscience, the unexpected nature of her fight both out of and under the cloak made for a story I couldn’t put down. She was never more real than when she had no idea the ripples she would cause yet she did what was needed anyway. Spooner did a fantastic job of sidestepping the tropes one would expect, instead crafting Marian in her own beautiful way. This was truly a character piece and I couldn’t be more happy that she was the main focus over any other element. And though I certainly wasn’t expecting the love story that developed, I’m all kinds of for it.Sherwood had a fascinating origin of a young woman not meant to become legend and should’ve been the original story all along. I look forward to the author exploring other fairytales and placing her own spin on them as she did this one.

I was a huge fan of Meagan Spooner’s Hunted, a marvelous retelling of The Beauty and the Beast and was eager for her next retelling, Sherwood. This time it would be Robin Hood, though with a twist, it would be Maid Marion taking on the iconic role. I know very little of the Robin Hood legend other than one Disney animated movie and a Mel Brooks movie. So, very limited knowledge but I was able to recognize certain characters as they made their appearance.Sadly though, this read just wasn’t for me. I am not doing so well in choosing great reads this year. It’s saddening! The problem this time was once again, pacing! The pacing about killed me in this one! The book is nearly 500 pages and it took over a quarter of the book for Marion to achieve her first task and it was a task that was set for her from the getgo basically and to take sooo very long to get it done, about killed me.We open to see Robin die and the news later filtered back to Marion. She’d devastated as they were betrothed and she goes into her cycle of mourning. It’s when she hears that her maid’s brother Will Scarlet has been taken prisoner for crimes he did not commit that she decides to act. She had taken a few of Robin’s things for the sake of memories but already her plan was forming to take on Robin’s identity and help to rescue her friend.It doesn’t end with that one rescue—as she has to do it again later—but she eventually finds some other familiar people by the names of Little John and Alan—not sure if Alan was actually a character though from the original tale! And soon, they begin their mission of stealing from the rich to help feed the poor for taxes were being raised by the prince and enforced by the sheriff.Then here’s where we get another (possibly) new character by the name of Guy of Gisborne. He set his sights on Marion for a possible marriage, but he’s also the sheriff’s right-hand man and does his bidding without question. He’s a very by-the-book kind of guy. He soon makes it his mission to bring the elusive Robin of Hood into custody in the name of justice.Again, I will say that this book was very slow, for me. There was too much buildup and fretting about in order to get to all the action moments. There was very little doing and once the doing was done, it was time to discuss for a very long time what the next move would be. I am sadden to admit that I did a lot of skim reading the last half of the book but the pacing was about to be the death of me. It helped to move things along as I skipped over a few things that were being drawn out. I sadly can’t really say that I enjoyed this one as much as Meagan’s first retelling. Perhaps it’s because I was not a Robin Hood fan like I was with The Beauty and the Beast. Again, I have very little knowledge where Robin and his Merry Men are concerned.There wasn’t a great deal of romance in this one either. We only ever got to see Marion and Robin together through flashbacks of their childhood growing up together and right before Robin left to fight in the King’s war. Though it shouldn’t be too surprising that a romance was on the horizon for Marion from an unexpected suitor. That particular bit let me feeling conflicted. I wasn’t sure how I felt about that turn of events, but I wasn’t totally against it either. One of those dreaded middle road feels which is honestly worse than being for it or against it, in my opinion at least.The ending though was pretty spectacular. It’s not a concrete happily ever after, but a more of what you will make it out to be. Those kinds of endings are particularly fun in their own way. While things may be over I still suspect that more adventures or misadventures will be had by all.While Sherwood wasn’t the read I was hoping for, it did have potential. Perhaps I just wasn’t ready for a slow paced read after a handful of so-so reads. I’d still recommend this to all Robin Hood fans though, it definitely had its merits.Overall Rating 2.5/5 stars—again I feel the need to say that this rating by me means that it was a slightly better than okay read! Pay no attention to what other sites say about 2 star reads!

I read this in one sitting. If you love Robin Hood, fairytale retellings or just plain beautiful writing, this one's for you. I loved Meagan Spooner's last book, Hunted, and Sherwood completely lived up to it. No spoilers here, but as you can see from the cover, Robin of Locksley dies at the very beginning of the book, and Marian has to pull on the green cloak and continue looking after his people. The story looks different from the point of view of a woman, with all the constraints and requirements that were on someone in Marian's position, and I loved stepping into Marian's world. There were so many perfect little details that brought it to life, and I honestly never wanted to stop reading. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to fall into a book and escape the real world.

I have been read The Dresden Files novels and enjoyed them immensely, and knew of the graphic novels, but waited for this omnibus to test the waters. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the books translated into the realm graphic novels. It's interesting to see different artists' takes on the characters I have come to know and love. Also, for the sheer size of this omnibus compared to the prices of other graphic novels of equal size, this is a great deal.If you are a fan of the books, I highly recommend it. If you are looking for a new comic to fully immerse yourself in, I still highly recommend it.It is a modern world steeped with hidden magics and terrors, not to mention some great dialogue and banter.

I'm really enjoying going back and reading the books I already know -- with the graphic novel images. It's surprising to me how many of my own mental images of the stories match up with what's been drawn (and how many don't!). Got this an 3 others for Christmas, as well as the Dresden RPG books which all have little bonus bits of the big story arch of the Dresden Files series. It's been great fun!!!

I love Jim Butcher's work and I 'm starting to really dig graphic novels (the latter has become a growing obsession). This omnibus has great stories and excellent art. My one major criticism (which dropped it a star) is that the stories were poorly edited. I found several glaring typos that kinda took me out of the moment. Also, the physical book is a little hard to manage. I find that after a certain page count, especially when the binding isn't the best, paper back editions of comics tend to get fragile. Otherwise, it's worth the buy.

First, I am a big fan of Jim Butcher's work. (e.g. We just went to Dragon Con 2016 to listen to him on panels).So I may be biased in my comments....PROGreat artwork and good story that feels right inlined with Jim's Dresden World. My guess if you like Jim's work you will love the stories.CONTechnical Issue. Using Kindle on a Apple 27" iMAC to view / read the series has found so far concern with readability.For pages set Horizontal vs Vertical (e.g. Locations 70 and 133) the story print text is too small to read full screen on a 27" iMAC monitor ... The print is clean so a magnifying glass can let you read it but not for me with 20/20 ....SUMMARYI love it .. outside the reading issue ....

WOW! Love the artwork in this graphic novel!Love the Dresden files books, decided to give this graphic novel a try. I was very impressed with the art work in this novel. This novel contains the first several books int eh Dresden files series, and also contains a couple of short stories that are not included int he series.

Beautiful illustrations with deep color transitions. And who doesn't love a good Dresden tale?!?!?! Excellent read, my boys have read volume I & II and are asking when I will get more. Thank you, Mr. Butcher, for helping my kids love to read as much as I do.

Great artistic style. Didn't mess with how I envisioned the characters. Fantastic adaptation from text to comic.

Great graphic novel, only wish they continued this for each book in the series.Not much to say otherwise, arrived on time and in perfect condition.

First part of book is relatively insightful, they interview key ceo's about bschool and you get a relatively balanced perspective. The review of what a bschool course load could look like and an overview of common teaching styles was helpful. Yes, this book does not spend time on or recommend part time programs. Nearly all mentors / authors are from top tier bschools.Second half of book is mostly useless with some good nuggets of info. The second half of the book outlines stuff like "buy a desk, so you can study while at home!" and "show up to class on-time" well duh.Good news though, this book reads very very quickly.

Before I started business school I was thirsty for information about the experience and how I could best prepare. I checked out a variety of books and bought few without reading them at the store. I do not feel this book is appropriate for people who are already in and are eager to make the most of the next two years. A better choice would be Case Studies & Cocktails: The "Now What?" Guide to Surviving Business School for it's narrowly focused but deep description of what to expect. In contrast, Business School Confidential takes a broad look for people who are considering busines school or want an overview of the process from application through acceptance and school selection. I have lent this to various friends or given advice from it directly to friends who had specific questions, but did not have a gameplan yet. None of the information in this book is terribly insightful or a secret, but some people make appreciate having it all in one place. This is not a book I personally would buy again, but would encourage people to borrow or leaf through and then make their own gameplan for how they will get into the school of their dreams.

this book is really intended for people who are considering business school. the first half covers admissions strategy (good essays, choosing the right target school, how to craft a good application), and the second half covers, in less depth, the wind-up to the start of your full-time mba education. like other reviewers mentioned, it tells you things that are somewhat given, like "research good neighborhoods to live in near your school", "make sure your study area is well lit and quiet", and "make sure you have a high-speed internet connection". while the interviews with ceo's are interesting, the book doesn't offer too much in the way of guiding your 'game-plan' for your mba education. there's some discussion of core classes in the b-school curriculum, as well as the importance of summer internship placement and group work in classes.overall, i think that this is a great book for anyone thinking about b-school a year or so before applying, as it provides a broad breadth of mba-related issues to consider. in terms of anyone trying to craft their 'game-plan' for their mba education, you are probably better off getting in touch with students already in your program.

Despite being long, this book is a quick read. As they say, time flies when you're having fun. I found this book profoundly helpful. In fact, I also read Med School Confidential and Law School Confidential just to make sure they were not for me (Yes, I liked the series just that much!!). I have loaned these out to people, and they enjoy them too. I plan to reread this one since I am getting closer to actually going to a graduate program. I most enjoyed how this book has advice from professors, college advisors, and more importantly, other students. Each book has a panel of real students giving you tips and advice. Some were and some were not business majors, so the advice is varied and helpful.Great Book! I hope they make a book "College Confidential" to give to high school kids thinking about college. I know a few younger relatives who could use a book like that!

My wife and I both attended top business schools (HBS and Kellogg) and we have recommended this book to numerous friends who are applying to or starting business school. It tells the reader what we wanted to know before starting school.Great source material from many students at a wide variety of schools and written by a recent grad. Many other books just focus on getting in, but this one treats the application process as part of the larger experience from application to finding a job. I read a lot of these a few years ago, and wish this one had come out then.

If you are a academic like myself, there are some MBA programs that specialize in mathematical programing and simulation software (i.e., Linear programming, Monte Carlo Simulations, CRYSTAL BALL / SEC II / @RISK software packages). Good addition to the Traveller universe with rules for Navy characters, and ship creation.

High Guard is a refreshingly familiar upgrade to the "old" books. I like the new presentation and depth of information and I think I will find this book even more heavily referenced than the original.

After a rather disappointing Mercenary book, I was pleasantly surprised by a masterful game supplement. The character generation rules for Navy characters are probably a little too hard (it is really hard to survive for long), but they are most certainly fun. Building a ship is fun. Massive starship combats are possible, though it's really a backdrop for smaller-scale action. The prose is no-nonsense, and the book is not exactly an enjoyable read, but it is packed. I can read something else for pleasure and pull what I need from this when I need it.Best of all, my book had some typos in it. So Mongoose is going to send me a new book, plus another rulebook to make up for the "inconvenience." I hope I can find some more Traveller books with typos! Great customer service.

While the initial version had some problems, Mongoose Publishing did the right thing and replaced the initial print run free of charge and threw in an extra book besides.There are some errors, but the errata does help to clear things up.Overall I would have to recommend this product.
