Lady Julia Grey, fresh from Italy, joins her family at the family home for the Christmas season and has a mystery to solve. She comes with her brothers Plum and Lysander and Lysander's new Italian wife Violante. They also brought along young Count Alessandro Fornacci who has a crush on Julia. When she arrives she finds quite a gathering. Her sister Portia is there as are poor relations Emma and Lucy Phipps along with Lucy's new fiance Sir Cedric Eastley, a self-made man, and his secretary/nephew Henry Ludlow. Also present is the man Julia has spent months trying to forget. Nicholas Brisbane is there along with his fiance Mrs. Charlotte King. That evening at dinner, they are joined by the Vicar who is an honorary uncle and his new curate Lucian Snow who is charming and rather feckless. He immediately uses his charm to try to endear himself to the wealthy, single ladies. This house party is filled with tension. Nicholas and Julia have unresolved issues and Snow's political views regarding gypsies immediately puts Julia's back up. There is also some secret about why Nicholas is wearing a sling. When Snow is found dead in the chapel with Lucy holding a bloody candlestick, the investigation begins. Julia's father orders Nicholas and Julia to investigate together which is not what Nicholas wants.Add in ghostly wanderings, quirky family members, missing jewels, and attempted poisonings and you have a wild ride of a mystery. I love the detailed picture of life in the upper classes in England in the late 1880s. Julia's father is quite a progressive thinker for his daughters but less so for his sons. He encourages Julia to stretch herself which is something Julia wants to do since she has never felt as alive or as useful as when she was involved in her first investigation and wants the same again.I am intrigued by Julia's relationship with Nicholas Brisbane. He is continually pushing her away and occasionally drawing her close. Julia is fascinated by the mystery of him.
I loved the 1st book, and the second ones sometimes disappointment. And if second books disappoint the third is usually bad.......Sigh....BUT GOODNEWS!!! This second book was just as good as the first! This Author has so many fun facts in her stories, along with history ( although if you are not familiar with true history you might think some of the things are factual, and not take them as artistic license. Or is it????? I love her writing, and love that the romance is being developed very slowly and we keep going back the the water hole to see if Lady Jane and Brisebane get it together.....well dont you want to know??? I am delighted to see she has lots of books, and I have my reading mapped out for at least a few months.....check it out she has dozens of books, like MCBeaton and some of our favorites that write for the Regency period. And I absolutely adore has she puts quirky things in her narratives that make you stop and think it through. Unfortunately, Santa did not give me grey pearls for a present, but I am old and dont go anywhere; I will be happy to scale down my expectations and just get the rest of her books; and this I know I will get my way with!
Lady Julia is returning home to her father's estate after a six-month sojourn in Italy with two of her brothers. Despite potential difficulties ( like her brother's sudden marriage to an Italian lady), she is pleased to be coming home. But all is not so rosy: Julia's sometime love interest has been invited--a long with his fiancée; Avery difficult aunt has taken up residence; and the assistant curate to their village is found in the manor with a bashed-in head. And so the chase is on to find the murderer, even if it is one of her family. I was not sure that I was going to try this book, the second in the series--largely because I find the "I love him, I hate him, I don't care about him" trope of some romance novels difficult to put up with. And this started still in that vein, but Julia does grow more mature over the course of the novel. If you're inclined, it would be better read after the first book, even though I believe this to be the better read.
