David Haskell is a professor of biology at the University of the South and was named the Carnegie-CASE professor of the year in Tennessee in 2009. In addition to his scholarly work, he has published essays and poetry. He lives with his wife in Sewanee, Tennessee.

The premise of this book is simple but the result is fascinating. The author, a naturalist, picks a small patch of old-growth forest in Tennessee and visits it three or four times per month over the course of a year. He then writes an essay on something that he observed in (on, above, below, etc.) that patch that he calls “the mandala.” (FYI- A mandala is a symbolic representation of the universe, or an aspect thereof, that some Eastern religions use for meditative purposes.) While botany and zoology form the heart of Haskell’s subject matter, the subjects vary and include geology, behavior (animal and human), light, medicinal use of plants, and more.Using a full year as his scope, Haskell catches some of the rare and ephemeral forest happenings. He drills down and offers the reader insight into what is happening beneath the bark and fallen leaves, providing background and context through his research that supplements his observations. In some of the articles we learn how the mandala may have changed over the centuries. In others we learn about happenings at scales too small for us to observe directly.Haskell’s descriptions are often beautiful and always necessary as he conveys all through words. There are no graphics, and so the reader benefits from vivid descriptions. The chapters / essays stand alone nicely, so one doesn’t have to read the book straight through, but can rather pick the book up once and a while over an extended time — as it was written. Reading this book over the course of a year wouldn’t be a bad way to go about it, particularly if one lives in an ecosystem similarly forested.There is a bibliography, but that’s about the extent of ancillary matter. It’s a simple book and that sparseness resonates well with the book’s theme and style.I enjoyed this book and think nature lovers will find it intriguing and enjoyable.

Perhaps I'm a bit obsessive, but this is the first book I've read in a while that I looked forward to reading day after day. It is so rich in the natural sciences combined with Buddhist like awareness that I would only read a few pages per day, wanting to savor every paragraph. The style of writing is mostly conversational in nature which allowed me to really feel what, to some degree, Mr. Haskell felt when he was there. It is a book I never wanted to end - that's what it felt like to me.I'm fortunate to have experienced similar environs in the Cumberland Plateau and southern Appalachian mountains. This book gave me a depth of understanding of the environmental symbiosis that I don't think I would have surmised otherwise. Mr. Haskell has certainly celebrated his UK literary roots combined with scientific expertise. The result is a book worth keeping in your library whether you are a nature lover or not. After reading this book, you may become a nature lover!Post addendum: my cousin lives on the same mountain as Mr. Haskell and pointed out the cove that is the focal point of the book. I didn't have time to go there but I will soon before the wildflower season ends! I was also fortunate to have met Mr. Haskell when he lectured at the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell, GA. He is quite a "regular guy", very down to earth, just like his writing!

I normally devour books. Some novels I finish in less than two days. I spent 2 months reading this book. I did this because it made me think. When the author talked about screws I didn't just move on, I thought about them and looked up some information on Wikipedia. I would read a chapter and think on it before starting the next chapter. A great read, but not one I recommend going through quickly.

I was going to read this monthly, following the months and seasons in the chapters. But I couldn't stop reading once I started, and I finished the book in five days as opposed to the twelve months I had planned.This is a fantastic piece of writing on natural history. I learned much from reading these pages, which includes a bit of science (which I will probably eventually forget); but especially I've learned to appreciate -- once again -- the natural world that is just a few steps outside my back door.Get this book. Read it. Savor it. Enjoy it.

This book is organized around a year of close observations of a single square meter of forest floor at the edge of the Cumberland Plateau, TN, in a beautiful area near which our family hiked and camped for many years. Haskell uses this tiny plot as a springboard to reach topics ranging from the microscopic and molecular to the global--illuminating the incredible complexity of living systems and their interrelatedness to each other and to their inanimate environment. He does an excellent job of folding in the many recent and amazing developments in the biological sciences that have taken place in recent years; biology has certainly taken a Great Leap Forward the last few decades! The format of the book is a set of short chapters, almost vignettes, covering the full year, each initially focusing on Haskell's square meter plot and then developing the plot's relationships to the rest of the fascinating biosphere in which Haskell's critters live and die.A scientist, Haskell writes like a poet, by no means a common accomplishment. His writing is not elaborate, florid, or ostentatiously elegant--it is just beautiful.

Very dry and boring. I love science and nature books, but this one did not captivate my attention. I finished it but thought that the author's mix of philosophical/ poetic meditations overwhelmed the factual and scientific part of the book. I appreciate the idea and the dedication of the author, but do not recommend this book for people interested in nature writing.

Comfort, peace and enlightenment are all available to you right here. If you live near a woods or ever take a walk in the woods this book will improve your appreciation of each moment. The author begins as a scientific expert, though his ultimate value in this form is his gift as a writer. I love to read his daily installments at the end of my day, go to sleep, and peacefully dream.
