I consider myself a feminist and was excited when we received these books for my daughter, because I want her to learn about powerful female role models, but I was sorely disappointed. In the Pioneers book, it says: "Marie Curie experimented and proved that girls are brilliant" - where's the educational value? It doesn't really tell the reader anything about Marie Curie (like what kind of experiments she did). Marie Curie is important because of the advances she made in science and because she was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. I want my daughter to take for granted that women are brilliant, not have a book tell her we are or that we weren't always thought to be (she will learn that the hard way later).A good feminist book would tell stories about strong, intelligent, courageous women and let girls draw the obvious conclusion that they too can be brilliant scientists or strong leaders or fearless explorers. Instead, they boil down female accomplishments into successes for women, instead of successes for society.

I ordered this for my daughter in the hopes of showing her some strong women. The artwork is wonderful, but the wording is just so short (one sentence per person with no background) that there isn't much of a story with the women and each book only has like 4 women. It's more novelty than book so I was a bit disappointed in that.

I really want to love these books. I purchased these for my infant daughter. I was excited to start teaching her earlier about strong women. I have no problem with the women selected in these books. Great choices. However the tiny sentence or two that is said about some is not only inaccurate but not very well thought out. The quote from Cleopatra. Why say she said something that she didn’t. Hillary Clinton. Yes I am with her. But saying she proves women could be leaders by running for president is really a poor choice when she most unfortunately lost the election. She has a lengthy political career, could the writers really not think of another example of leadership for her? My five month old doesn’t know she lost but someday she will be able to read on her own and this makes it seem like she won. Not to mention historically inaccurate quotes from other women. These wonderful women represented in these books deserved a little bit better, even for a board book that most infants are going to chew on.All that said don’t stop yourself from making this purchase. It is a start. A start at teaching our boys and girls history. For little ones that can read and I understand use it as a starting point for more discussion.

I'm disappointed in this book set. I know it's board books, so there isn't a lot of space, but I expected something better than cliche lines like "girls should be heard" or "girls can be the boss." It would have been so much more powerful to add another sentence about what the women actually did, why it was an accomplishment, what they overcame, how they persevered, how smart or innovative they were, how they were really good people, or even just more about the context they were in when they achieved something noteworthy. Might as well buy your child a t-shirt that says "girl power" or "girls rule" because it's about the same thing. There are much better books out there for raising little feminists.

I wanted to love these books but any feminist knows that calling women “girls” is patronizing, why on earth would the author refer to all of these strong WOMEN as girls.

Not only are these books filled with adorable artwork, but they provide a great starting point for addressing feminism with my daughter. Many reviews complain about the small sentences or “inaccurate” quotes. Just stop, these books are meant for toddlers, they aren’t supposed to have in-depth research or complex sentences. Use these books as what they are: a tool to interact with your toddler about the topic of strong females. Use the pictures to point out things and expand your child’s vocabulary. Later on, use the simple sentences to spark conversation between you and your toddler about who these women are and what they have contributed to history. These books are awesome and my daughter loves them. Bonus points because they’re compact and travel well!

I was hoping these would instill lessons of confidence. A story of someone standing up for herself or others, or seeing and not buying into some double standard or other. Something to communicate, in an age appropriate way, that my daughter has the same rights to space, opinions and resources as anyone else. Sadly these are nothing like that at all.They're just one-liners about various women. These women have very inspiring stories but they are reduced to a single trite sentence. Page after page of a different cartoon lady and a sentence that a board-book-level baby is not engaged with.Baby was bored.

This is a fantastic idea, and the quality and illustrations are great. But it does not connect with toddlers. Each page highlights one person with one sentence about them and then moves on. No story. Nothing to touch or observe. There’s nothing to hold a toddler or child’s attention.
